No Turning to Gold for Rent: Leave the Gold Coins for Weddings, We Only Accept TL

Recently, we’ve noticed some media outlets spreading news about paying rent in gold. Yes, gold is valuable, it shines brightly at weddings, and can be saved gram by gram under the pillow. But dear citizens, paying your rent this way is unfortunately not legal. So, as the Ministry, we felt the need to make this announcement (otherwise, the number of people asking, “Is this a gold savings club?” will increase).

Now, let’s clarify things for everyone: According to the 2018 amendment to Article 4 of the Decision No. 32 on the Protection of the Value of Turkish Currency, individuals residing in Turkey cannot enter into contracts where rent or any other payment obligation is made in foreign currency or indexed to it. And as for paying in gold, that’s simply out of the question. Writing "quarter gold" as the rent amount and keeping an eye on gold prices is not the right move.

In short: Gold is precious, but TL is honorable. You can keep your gold coins under the pillow, in the bank, or for weddings, but please don’t suggest settling rent with them. Otherwise, you may find yourself in violation of the regulations and face some trouble. Be cautious!

Lastly, we respectfully announce to the public: Rent payments are in TL, leave the gold coins for invitations. :)
